Volunteers

As the Ohio Valley’s foremost non-profit hospice, Valley Hospice depends on its volunteers.

No one else provides the kind of services hospice does. Without the efforts of volunteers, hospice could not continue its important work. In 2005, volunteers saved Valley Hospice over $142,000.00, helping us to care for patients and their families regardless of their ability to pay. Volunteers are valuable members of the Valley Hospice team. They are included as part of the Inter-Disciplinary Team, working hand in hand with:

  • Medical Director
  • Physicians
  • Nurses
  • Certified Nursing Assistants
  • Social Workers
  • Volunteer Coordinator
  • Other Volunteers
  • Staff
  • Administration
Volunteers receive comprehensive training.

Volunteer training covers:

  • The Hospice approach & ethics
  • Listening & communication skills
  • Psychological & spiritual aspects of dying
  • Grief, loss, & bereavement
  • Family interactions
  • Stress
  • Terminal illness
  • Ambulation
  • Crisis intervention
  • Infection control
  • Hospice in the nursing facility
  • Documentation

Additional in-services and training are provided.

Volunteers serve Valley Hospice in many ways.

As a Valley Hospice Volunteer, you have many options, so that you can choose to help in a way that makes the best use of your time and talents. However, anyone working with patients or families must wait one year after the loss of a family member.

If you have a talent that would be helpful to Valley Hospice, but is not listed, such as simple home repairs, hair styling, or music therapy, please contact us. We welcome new ideas!
